Family photography season is picking up, and I’m excited to be sharing more of the best Richmond locations for family photo sessions, with this week’s feature being Belle Isle! Whether you’re planning your own family photos or you are a photographer yourself, deciding on a location can be a tough task, especially if you are considering someplace you have never visited before. Richmond has so many beautiful landscapes, filled with gardens, historical site, waterfronts and more, but here are my top 5 go-to , tried and true locations for Richmond family photo sessions. Location is so important to me as an artist, and my criteria for the ideal spot is based on a number of factors. I look for locations that are:

• Beauty
• Predictability
• Affordability
• Interesting for kids

Richmond Family Photo Sessions – Belle Isle

Belle Isle Richmond

Located in the heart of Richmond, Belle Isle is a beautiful park with a ton of variety. Some important things to know before planning your Richmond family photo session here:

• The park is open dawn to dusk.
• It is an island in the James River, so it can be a bit of a hike to get to from the parking lot. You can park and use the pedestrian bridge under the Lee Bridge to get to the island. The bridge does have a ramp and is stroller friendly.
• The walk across the bridge is very breezy, and therefore very cold during the fall and winter months.
• The parking lot is located next to Historic Tredegar.
• Pay attention to Richmond city events such as the Richmond Marathon, that may obstruct parking areas and access to the park.
• Keep a close eye on children, as there is rocky terrain on the edges of the island that lead right up to the river.
