Whether you’re planning your own family photos or you are a photographer yourself, deciding on a location can be a tough task, especially if you are considering someplace you have never visited before. Richmond has so many beautiful landscapes, filled with gardens, historical site, waterfronts and more, but here are my top 5 go-to , tried and true locations for Richmond family photo sessions. Location is so important to me as an artist, and my criteria for the ideal spot is based on a number of factors. I look for locations that are:

• Beautiful all year round
• Predictability
• Affordability
• Interesting for kids

Richmond Family Photo Sessions – Maymont

Maymont Park

When I was young and growing up in Richmond, Maymont was like a wonderland to me, and since then not much has changed. It’s storybook landscapes and serene paths through gardens and a pond offer the perfect scenery for a magical session. In addition, the grounds have a fair amount of evergreen foliage, so I find it to be the most reliable session location.

A few tips about Maymont:

• Park at the Hampton Street entrance to be closest to the mansion and gardens
• If you plan to walk down to the Japanese gardens, the hill is pretty steep so plan to wear comfortable shoes and forgo the stroller
• It can be pretty crowded, especially in the spring and especially on weekends and evenings
• The park opens well after sunrise and typically closes before sunset, depending on the time of year, so check the current hours before scheduling your session
• They hosts several events throughout the year, so be sure to check their calendar before planning your session
• Maymont park does not charge a fee for professional photography on their grounds, but they do have a donation box at the entrance where you can donate if you choose
